Bael / Bilva Fruit (Aegle Marmleos Fruit)

Herb of choice in colitis and chronic diarrhoea.

Part Used: fruit (immature)
Energetics: astringent, sweet/cooling/sweet K-V+, increases Agni.

Precautions: not used during acute fevers, safe in chronic fevers
Preparation: powder (250 mg to 1 gm), decoction, confection.

Indications: malabsorption, chronic diarrhea (particularly in children), dysentery (amoebic), colic, diabetes, bleeding, cough, insomnia.

BILVA is an important Ayurvedic astringent and stimulant for chronic weak digestion and malabsorption, improving both the digestive fire and small intestine function. Bilva is also one of the most sacred plant to Shiva, the God of Pure Consciousness, fortifying the heart and soothing the eyes. For those suffering from chronic loose stool and weak appetite its healing effects can be extraordinary.

One-half teaspoon of the powder along with one teaspoon of honey stops nausea and vomiting. One teaspoon of the powder mixed with enough goat’s milk to make a paste in excellent for countering stomatitis and other ulcerative sores. Please note that the ripe fruit has laxative and nutritive properties and is not as astringent as the unripe fruit. Various jams and confections are made with the fruit.
