Yashtimadhu Tablets (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

Yashti-madhu (Licorice) or Glycyrrhiza glabra is a herb most known for its soothing effect on inflamed mucous membranes of the throat, lungs, stomach and intestines. The demulcent and anti-ulcerogenic action of Yashti-madhu is beneficial in gastric and duodenal ulcers, esophageal ulceration or inflammation, heartburn and mouth ulcers.

Glycyrrbiza Glabra: yashtimadhu (‘the sweet stick’)

The underground stem of the liquorice plant, which was much used in ancient China, Egypt, Greece and Rome, is sweet, bitter and astringent, cool, and sweet after digestion. It reduces vata and pitta, but increases kapha after long-term use by causing salt and water retention and potassium loss, comparable to the effects of cortisone. Liquorice soothes sore throats and eases hoarseness, dilates the respiratory tree to ease breathing and promote expectoration of mucus, regulates the menstrual cycle, quells haemorrhages, reverses the effects of poisoning and is an aphrodisiac. It can act both as an emetic and a laxative, improves the eyesight, strength, sexual power and complexion, and strengthens the hair. It increases the production of shukra and rejuvenates the system. Given with other herbs, it hides their tastes even while it catalyzes their actions. Its liniment is applied to injuries and its decoction or medicated ghee is applied to both accidental and surgical wounds to assist their healing. Chewing on a stem allays thirst, burning sensations, loss of appetite, cough, fatigue and emaciation.
